Every so often, I come across musings on the removal of tarot card borders and mostly they talk about how the colours pop and the visual impact… and when I found myself with two sets of the same deck recently after a string of confusions, it seemed a perfect excuse to give one the chop…
Mostly borders don’t bother me as I can mentally delete them… though every now and then there’s the odd deck where the border seems to scream louder than the images… and to me, this was one of them… Those borders were way too white for my liking… whiter than white… ultra! brite! white! like some ‘ and this is how it looks after the wash‘ garment in some cliched soap powder ad! They had to go…
The Cosmic Tarot by Norbert Losche
Yes… that feels much better… much more to my taste… it appeals to my eye in its deliciousness that reminds me of powdery coated pastel hued Turkish delights…
But the bonus was not the aesthetic charm and pleasure that it now gave me…
No… I was far more taken with the actual process…
There is much to be said for mindless repetition… skull numbing prissiness and attention to detail… the slowing and steadying of the hand and how it tames the brain…
My head had been full of too many thoughts to rally and shepherd into action… even writing out a to do list didn’t calm them into order… Instead I blank stared and minutes then hours passed as nothing got done…
But cold metal in my hand… a rule and a sharp blade…
Hours quietly slipped by…
And when I uncurled my frozen hands… I found a wry smile spread across my face… realising that I’d somehow arranged into order my whole week to come and actually… even slotted in a couple of days off…
Now that’s a benefit to borderectomies that far out weighs the prettiness of pictures…

It took me while to decide to go for it but I’m pleased with the result. The first card is the hardest but once that’s done and you see the difference, it’s fine! The new size feels good in the palm… Also, you get a nice finishing touch of you run a metallic sharpie around the edges… I have another deck I’d love to chop because it has big keywords on… But I won’t because it would completely ruin the design on the back… 😉
