So… a few weeks or maybe a couple of months back, on a very warm and sunny afternoon… I drifted into slumber and woke with such a jolt and feeling of terror that washed over me… and as I waited for the adrenalin to subside and for my heart to slow back down… I sat in a cold clammy sweat and thought – What was that? What filled me with fear?
And the words that came were BLACK ANNIS…
Now… anyone who’s grown up in my neck of the woods, would be familiar with the local Leicester lass…
I sat and I remembered how when we were kids, we would run past the place where the Legend was said to have dwelled… and especially as the nights drew in and we were running to get home before total darkness… we would still rather run the two long sides of the triangle and scare ourselves silly rather than take the safe short route…
So… I got out my pastels to explore through a draw…
Black Annis… Who are you? How do you feel…
And this is what I saw…
Well… I didn’t really care much for what I saw… and I wasn’t much in the mood to explore…
It was summer… and it’s easy to ignore…
When the sun is out…
But now the nights draw in again…
She returned…
My youngest came home from school and said…
Do you know the Black Annis?
I said… Why….? What do you know?
And he told me the story that he’d learnt at school…
You can meet her … CLICK HERE…
He said… Mum? Why do they tell kids these stories of monsters that rip apart children…?
I said… Good question son… Why do they? But he was gone…
So I pulled out the Barbara Walker Tarot and asked…
So… I looked at that 6 of Cups… and in most decks… that’s a card that throws back to childhood and early memories which are packed with nostalgia and warm glows… This one here points back to a different kind of childhood…
It fills my mind with all those thoughts of Speak when you are spoken to… and… I AM BIG… and you are small…
But what of that Queen and King of Swords?
What do they say?
Kali & Yama
Kali the dark Goddess… life and death so closely linked… full of power and worthy of an entire blog post to herself… that I may do at a later date… Yes… Kali… I will return to speak at length with you…
And Yama… Has he slain or has he tamed the beast?
6 of Cups… Queen of Swords… King of Swords…
The whole picture seems to speak of suppression of child like dreams by fear and control…
Yet look again…
I think of Matilda and how she got in touch with her own power…
So… I ask this time…
When I look into the darkness and feel in to the fear to find my Goddess…
And I tame that fear…
How does that feel…
So again I draw…
And this is what I saw…
