How do you learn to read Tarot?
That’s a question I get asked all the time… and my answer … Throw your LWB away…
And that never seems to go down well… and then the next question is…
But how will I know what the cards mean?
Look at them….? Have you tried that…?
Then the next question… What? What do you mean? How do YOU do it?
And from what I’m gathering, a lot of professional readers get this same question…
again.. and again…. and… again…
Which puzzles me really, as the sticky point seems to be with the look at the pictures…
Yet… why is that such a big scary idea to grasp?
When we first teach our children to read, we give them picture books… not lengthy rambles of words…No… we give them… big, bold, colourful picture books… and they pick them up and they talk and they tell whatever story they want to tell… and usually very loudly and with much gusto and over and over again with no respect for time or place! Just a running commentary of words and noises and laughter and finger pointing…
So maybe the real question is not how do you learn to read, but how do you remember to see?
So… with those thoughts rolling round my mind, I drifted into my garden with my camera and wandered around until I took a snapshot that resonated for me…
So… How do I read? Oh… lots of ways… but today… this was my way…

So… this is what caught my eye… and then in my mind, cards started to roll out… so… it went… to Mystereum… Ace of Pentacles… oh… and a 10 of Pents vibe… oh… look… it has a whiff of 5 of Cups… and oh… what’s that one? Mmmmm…. Deck change…. Osho Zen… 8 of Water…
So I walked inside and sat down and got out the two decks and I laid those cards down like a story board… and I thought mmm… Interesting flip with the change of deck… I wonder what that reflects? So… I got out the corresponding cards from both decks… and added my second line to the story board… But as it is a reflection… I placed those in reverse…. So… 8 of Cups, 5 of Water, 10 of Rainbows, Ace of Rainbows… Like so…

So… that is one of the ways I read… And the question was HOW rather than WHAT do I read…
So… I’m going to take a lesson from Osho Zen here… and let you find your own lesson…
What is the story you see?
But… before I leave you… I will offer up the advice I further found in my garden…

Ah… Grasshopper! Be aware of the fundamental interconnectedness of all things… and be sure…
that whichever path you are on…
you are on the right path for you…

Great Karen! Thanks for these insights. I loved the way you compare teaching Tarot with teaching children a picture book.

Well… I have 4 kids… so you have to go with what you know… Besides… I think tarot should be as accessible as possible… And I’m keeping my eye on you… I’m waiting for you to arrive in U.K. π Loved listening in on… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epp9BFb-7u8
