WELCOME!!

Greetings, salutations and felicitations!

Oh… and before any one asks… NO! I am not ready for Christmas! πŸ˜€

So… it has to be said… me telling folks I know, that I’m writing this has been met with much hilarity and raucous laughter… I’m not best known in these parts for my love of the festive season… I’ll spare you the litany of yuletide disasters that have befallen the Sealey household over the last 20 odd years… But let’s just say… when I see this card… It’s not the tree that I at first notice… It’s the row of exploding heads… and then the cat that looks like it’s pissing up the kid’s leg, just for good measure…

And this year… I have been particularly foul of temperament when that dreaded C word is mentioned…

A friend asked me… so… what is it that’s annoying you about Christmas?

I said… you know what’s annoying me? Every BLOODY thing!! It’s been annoying me this year since June 7th when in my facebook newsfeed, up pops – ONLY 200 sleeps to go! ONLY 200!!! Seriously… who counts down 200 sleeps? I have 10 years worth of stuff to squeeze in between early June and that C word πŸ˜€

But… before you pelt me to death with humbugs… I’ll rein in the rant and share a couple of things that snap me out of my gnarliness πŸ˜€

STARS!!! I LOVE STARS!!!

Yes… I know they are there all year round 24/7 but Winter stars are the most sparkly… But why I love them the most, is because they take me back to when I was dreaming into the future…

When I first met the now long suffering Mr S, it was a harsh and bitter Winter… He would come a wooing and take me out and more often than not, it was snowing big fat fluffy flakes that fell into drifts that stopped the traffic from running and we walked everywhere… me with my hand wrapped in his warm palm and stuffed into the pocket of his donkey jacket. On one biting cold night in between bouts of snow, the frost came down hard and he was walking me home. The sky was completely free of clouds and shimmering and twinkling with too many stars to count and the ground… it glistened… and glimmered… I remember thinking… Oh… Poor old Dick Whittington… and his streets paved with gold… The Cosmos has strewn down a billion diamonds onto our path…The thought was engulfed by a wave of bliss and a feeling of this is exactly where I am supposed to be… then came the whoosh of realising how microscopically tiny we were in the vast infinity of creation… and every cold, frosty, starry night takes me right back there.

The other thing guaranteed to snap me into seasonal smiles… Evergreens…

For me, as a child there was a distinct starting point that marked that Christmas had arrived… It happened every year on Christmas Eve, when my Grandfather would arrive at our house, bringing Holly from his garden that was placed up over the fire place and across the tops of mirrors and any big picture frames that would hold it… Yes… The arrival of the green stuff on December 24th… funny! I don’t remember anyone ever saying oh! ONLY ONE MORE SLEEP ‘TIL CHRISTMAS!!!

In fact… I don’t remember anyone ever counting sleeps before The Muppets’ Christmas Carol… I’m going to blame The Muppets!! But I won’t hold it too hard against them… πŸ˜€

So… I thought I’d delve into The Druid Plant Oracle to find some Winter goodies to share…

I found there, the Mistletoe and the Ivy… But no Holly…

But not to worry… there’s 3 blank cards in that deck, to do with as you will… So here is my Holly card… And instead of The Muppets’ Christmas Carol… I will let my Holly sing you out with the words that are hidden in Ogham alphabet in the border…

  1. Bah Humbug! LOL. I’m with you on the disgust at the “C” word starting earlier every year. I refuse to have it mentioned before December (oh, OK, the middle of November), but certainly not in the middle of summer!

    1. Thanks! I love that Star card too… It’s my favourite!! Though… my favourite card is pretty much like my favourite child, in that it is whichever one just happens to be in my hand or within earshot when quizzed on the subject… πŸ˜€

  2. I love the idea of real greenery coming into the home on Christmas Eve. You see the real stuff won’t last if you bring it in ahead of time. The whole C-biz is so artificial, and so much consumer pressure to buy things. Yuck! I keep as simple as possible (have no small children, though, just adult ones who understand).

I think that’s why I like harkening back to the pagan roots of the season and focusing on warm fires, warm company, diamond/sparkly stars (when we can see them here in the big light-polluting city) and a frosty moon.

Happy Boxing Day, Karen! I look forward to more great musings from you in the new year.

    1. Thanks Joanne πŸ™‚ and Happy Boxing Day! Yes… I’m finding xmas to be a lot more fun, when nobody is quite sure whether or not it’s happening… I’ve dumped a lot of the stuff we used to do… Mr S thinks I’m a miserable old cow (he may have a point πŸ˜€ ) I just tell him I’ve discovered the joy of opting out πŸ˜€
Like you say… warm fires, warm company and sparkly things… That’s pretty much everything needed… though I do love fairy lights πŸ˜€

  3. I’m another Christmas humbug. Though I enjoy the day, I don’t have any desire to make an early start on it! I love your winter smiles – those starry skies and the seasonal smells. I didn’t do any baking this year, and missed it – used to do that with my Gran, and that’s when I knew Christmas was really on πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Chloe πŸ™‚ Yes… I must admit, I do enjoy the actual day and I always feel a bit sad when it’s time to take the tree down. It is those more personal touches like baking with Gran that make it special πŸ™‚

  4. Heh. I’m not a huge fan of this holiday either for many reasons…one is the relentless hype it receives and then gods forbid you give the WRONG gift. ARGH the pressure! But I love the smell of pine so that’s a good reminder!

    1. πŸ˜€ though.. I have to confess… I took extreme perverse pleasure yesterday…I had to sign and date something and I asked the woman what the date was… She said oh my, it’s the 14th already, we’re halfway through the month… I said to her yup! soon be Christmas πŸ˜€ I thought she was going to punch me in the face πŸ˜€ but it would have been so worth it! πŸ˜€
